Dean lives with Lisa and her son Ben, and has given up hunting for a year after Sam left. Mysterious occurrences appear in Dean's neighbourhood and he is forced back into the world of the supernatural. Sam rescues Dean and reveals he escaped from Hell around the time Dean started living with Lisa, and introduces Dean to family members he never even knew existed: the Campbells; his mother’s cousins, hunters led by none other than their Grandfather Samuel. Dean leaves Lisa and Ben with Bobby so he and Sam can kill the Djinn tormenting the people close to Dean. In the end Dean decides to live with Lisa and Ben, and tells Sam to keep in touch.

Sam investigates a case about missing babies whose parents are being mysteriously murdered. At one of the crime scenes, he discovers a baby that was left behind and calls Dean for help. Reluctant to leave Lisa and Ben, Dean finally agrees to meet Sam and surprises his brother with how parental he has become. The brothers take the baby (revealed to be a shape-shifter) to Samuel, who decides to raise it as a hunter, which infuriates Dean. However, before they can decide the baby's future, a shape-shifter breaks in and kidnaps the baby. The shape-shifter was apparently the father of all shape-shifters (The Alpha), and was much stronger than the others. Samuel secretly talks to someone on the phone promising he'll capture the alpha. After losing the baby, Dean returns to Lisa, and tells her that he is not sure whether he should stay to protect her and Ben, or go to make sure nothing happens to them. Lisa tells Dean to leave, but just come back home whenever he can.
107 3 "The Third Man" Robert Singer Ben Edlund October 8, 2010 (2010-10-08) 3X6054 2.16[4]
Sam and Dean call Castiel for help when they investigate a case about several dead police officers who seem to have been killed by the plagues of Egypt. Castiel confirms the staff of Moses was used to kill the cops and tells Sam and Dean that Heaven is in a state of chaos and civil war between angels and God's weapons have been stolen. Castiel also has no answers for Sam on who could have released him from Lucifer's cage. The three find that the officers were involved in the shooting of a suspect, Christopher Burch, and pay the suspect's father a visit. They discover that the father was not involved but Christopher's younger brother, Aaron. He explains that he prayed for divine punishment for Christopher's murderers and an angel responded by giving him the staff in exchange for his soul. Castiel deduces that the angel responsible has split the staff into pieces to give to humans and buying their souls. In order to get the name of the angel, Castiel finds the brand inside Aaron and discovers Balthazar (guest star Sebastian Roché) to be responsible. However the archangel Raphael is also on to Balthazar's whereabouts as well. When Castiel confronts Balthazar in his residence, Balthazar explains he deserted Heaven and thanks Castiel for creating the current situation. Raphael arrives and Balthazar leaves Castiel to deal with the mess. Before Castiel is killed by Raphael, Balthazar returns and uses what appears to be a white crystal to disintegrate Raphael's host into salt (apparently used on Lot's wife when she looked back at the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah). Dean uses holy fire to trap Balthazar and force him to return Aaron's soul. Castiel releases Balthazar for repaying his rescue and both angels depart with no explanation to the brothers. Later, Dean questions Sam on his recent actions and thinks something's different with him. Sam assures him he's fine, but Dean remains concerned.
108 4 "Weekend at Bobby's" Jensen Ackles Andrew Dabb & Daniel Loflin October 15, 2010 (2010-10-15) 3X6051 2.84[5]
Bobby summons Crowley to have him return his soul as part of the deal to end the Apocalypse. However, Crowley reneges on the deal and holds it for a ten year period. Bobby begins to research Crowley's origins and even captures and tortures a Crossroads demon to find his real name before he became a demon. Throughout the weekend, Bobby provides support for the Winchester brothers and the rest of the hunters, helps fellow hunter Rufus bury a Japanese okami demon and contends with an FBI agent trying to hunt down Rufus. Bobby then goes and hunts for the okami when he realizes it survived and escaped. Although he manages to finish off the okami, it ruins his chances of striking up a relationship with Marcy, his next-door neighbor. Dean tells Bobby about Sam's changes and his problems, but Bobby is distracted by other calls. When Dean scolds Bobby for being selfish and cold for not listening, Bobby snaps and gives a telling-off to both brothers and says that he also has his own problems and he can't always be there for them. Bobby learns from the Crossroads demon that Crowley's real name is Fergus Macleod and he is now the King of Hell. He then calls up Crowley's long deceased son Gavin for information and summons Crowley to threaten him to return his soul. Crowley refuses until Gavin himself tells his father that he told Bobby everything he could know about him. Crowley is shaken but remains unmoved until Dean and Sam calls him to reveal that they are at his grave in Scotland and have dug up his body to prepare for burning. Crowley reluctantly returns Bobby's soul and destroys the contract, and goes to Scotland to pick up his remains, presumably to hide them elsewhere. Later, Bobby thanks the brothers for helping him with this, and once again returns to his usual work.
109 5 "Live Free or TwiHard" Rod Hardy Brett Matthews October 22, 2010 (2010-10-22) 3X6056 2.47[6]
Sam and Dean investigate a series of missing girls who all share one thing in common: they are all hardcore Twilight fans. They realize the girls are being preyed upon by vampires in the area and stake out a local bar to find the culprits. As Sam goes after one vampire, Dean goes after another, only to end up being turned into one himself while Sam stands by and watches. The boys call Samuel, who tells them that as long as Dean has not fed on any humans, he can still be cured of his vampirism. However, making the cure requires the blood of the vampire who turned Dean. Dean tells Sam and his grandfather to stay at the motel while he invades the nest alone. As he leaves, Samuel reprimands Sam for allowing Dean to be turned when he already knew there was a cure. When he arrives, Dean is greeted with open arms by the rest of the vampires and is told he is going to be a 'recruiter' - someone meant to seduce and turn the naive Twilight fans into one of them, so that they in turn can transform gullible boys and so on and so on, until they have a vampire army. Dean attempts to inject the head vampire with dead man's blood, but is overpowered. All of the vampires suddenly drop to the floor unconscious, Dean included, as they are granted a vision by their Alpha. Dean wakes up just in time to fight off the horde of vampires who have now turned against him. After killing nearly all the vampires single-handedly, Samuel and Sam find him with the decapitated Boris, the head vampire, at his feet. Later, as Dean drinks the cure he has a recollection of everything that has happened to him from the present back until the time when he was turned. As his memories flood back to him, he recalls Sam watching with a smile while Boris attacked and transformed him. He tells them about the vampires' plan to build an army and as they walk back to the Impala, asks Sam if he can trust him. Sam smiles and reassures him that he can.

Teleplay by: Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder
October 29, 2010 (2010-10-29) 3X6055 2.52[7]
Dean and Sam investigate a series of deaths where the victims had everybody telling them the cruel truth about themselves, leading them to commit suicide. Dean is now wary of his brother ever since he remembers seeing Sam allowing the vampire to attack him. During their investigation, the brothers believe that someone is using Gabriel's Horn of Truth to force people to reveal the truth unwillingly. However, after the suicide victims' bodies disappear from the morgue, they research further and discover Veritas, the goddess of truth, responsible. Veritas poses as a news broadcaster due to her love of attention and also to target potential victims who wanted the truth. Verita's spell affects Dean and while trying to rid himself of it, Dean receives a call from Lisa, who is forced to tell her thoughts about Sam's return and Dean's demon-hunting life. Dean takes advantage of the situation to question Sam about the night he stood by and watched him get attacked by the vampire, but Sam says he just froze and is appalled Dean doesn't trust him. As Sam appears to have told the truth, Dean lets the matter rest and they both go after Veritas in her residence. They discover Veritas has taken her victims' bodies in order to eat them as sacrifices. Both brothers are then knocked out by Veritas who ties them up and uses her powers to force them to tell the truth about how they feel about each other. However, when it's Sam's turn to tell the truth, Veritas discovers he can lie through her influence and tells Dean that his brother is not human. Veritas tries to kill Sam but he and Dean manage to kill her. Dean holds Sam at knife-point and demands he reveal the whole truth of who he is. Sam tells Dean that he really is Sam but finds that ever since he came back from Lucifer's cage, he feels nothing and has no problems doing things that previously he would not have done, and then asks his brother for help with his condition. Dean appears to accept his explanation, but then throttles Sam and beats him into unconsciousness.
111 7 "Family Matters" Guy Bee Andrew Dabb & Daniel Loflin November 5, 2010 (2010-11-05) 3X6057 2.46[8]
Dean enlists Castiel's help to find out what's wrong with Sam, who is tied up for safety. Sam reveals that he doesn't sleep ever since he came back, and feels no emotions but does feel pain. Castiel discovers Sam has no soul. Dean, Sam and Castiel go to visit Samuel to check if he has a soul, which he does. While Castiel goes elsewhere to investigate, the brothers learn that Samuel is going to hunt down the alpha vampire without informing them. Dean offers their help but has a feeling not to trust his grandfather and his hunting group. Dean is assigned with Gwen to stand guard outside while Sam follows the rest of the hunters to the vampire nest. Dean finds Samuel and the hunters capturing the alpha vamp, but goes back to his post and pretends to have no knowledge of what he's seen. Dean questions Sam later and discovers his brother was the one who advised Samuel not to tell him about capturing the creatures. Furious, Dean tells Sam that he will now take the shots and Sam will report whatever he sees or does. Sam offers to help Samuel interrogate the alpha vamp but is turned down. However, Sam gets a hold of his cell phone signal and both brothers follow Samuel to a warehouse. They find Samuel torturing the alpha vamp with no effect, but they go to question him once Samuel leaves. The alpha reveals that Samuel wants the location of Purgatory for some unknown purpose. The alpha later escapes and kills several hunters, but is captured by demon-possessed hunters who teleport him away. Crowley appears and reveals that Samuel works for him to collect alpha creatures. He tells Sam that he was the one who brought him out of Lucifer's cage but took his soul. Crowley tells them that he calls the shots and they have no choice but to follow his orders. After the demon leaves, Sam wants to kill Samuel for betraying and lying to them but Dean lets him go. Samuel tells them that he only works to capture creatures but has no intention to harm the brothers. While the brothers have no choice but to follow Crowley's orders, Sam assures Dean that Crowley will get his just deserts when they get the chance.
112 8 "All Dogs Go to Heaven" Phil Sgriccia Adam Glass November 12, 2010 (2010-11-12) 3X6058 2.09[9]
Crowley appears before Sam and Dean and reminds them that as long as Sam's soul is at stake, they work for him. He offers them a deal: an alpha in exchange for Sam's soul. Crowley then gives them their next assignment, news of a murdered businessman with his chest open and his heart ripped out. The murder is similar to a werewolf attack. The two brothers arrive at a scene of another murder disguised as federal agents. They learn that the second victim was murdered in the same way as the first victim. After some research, Sam discovers Cal Garrigan is the common denominator between the killings. Again disguised as federal agents, they interview Cal. They also meet Cal's girlfriend Mandy, Mandy’s son Aiden and their dog Lucky. They then spy on Cal throughout the night to see if he turns into a werewolf. They leave after verifying that he is not. Cal is murdered by Lucky shortly afterwards. Meanwhile, Dean goes to look for more clues, and Sam stakes out Cal's house. Sam sees the dog Lucky transform into a man and follows him out of the house. There is a chase and Lucky is hit by a van. It turns out their initial assumption about werewolfs is wrong, the murderers are skin-walkers. Sam and Dean find the dog Lucky at an animal hospital and trap him. They convince him that it would be better for him to give up his pack than to risk the family he loves. Lucky tells the two that the skin-walkers plan to infiltrate families as pet dogs and upon given a signal, turn the families into skin-walkers. This would dramatically increase their numbers. Dean decides that it is better to eliminate the leader of the skin-walker pack than to risk having families turned into skin-walkers. There is a shootout. The leader of the skin-walker pack is killed along with all of the other skin-walkers. Lucky is wounded and escapes. Lucky then goes back to the home of Mandy to thank her for her kindness. Mandy tells him to leave and never come back. Sam and Dean have a conversation. Sam tells Dean that although having no soul makes him a better hunter he would like to have his soul back.
113 9 "Clap Your Hands If You Believe..." John Showalter Ben Edlund November 19, 2010 (2010-11-19) 3X6059 1.94[10]
The Winchester brothers investigate a series of disappearances in a small town resembling alien abductions. They question the first victim's father Brennan, a watchmaker who is adamant that his son will never return, but is keeping something from them. While Sam watches Brennan, Dean investigates the cornfield where people have been disappearing, and is seemingly abducted by a UFO. Sam finds Dean's abandoned phone and goes to a UFO gathering to learn more about the abductions. Dean is sent back hours later and is annoyed to find Sam spending the night with a groupie he befriended at the gathering instead of searching for him. Continuing their research into the case, Dean begins seeing a strange man only he can see and encounters a Tinkerbell like fairy radiating an energy sphere but manages to kill it by trapping and cooking it in a microwave oven. Dean tries to convince Sam of the bizarre events but Sam remains skeptical. The brothers discover Brennan acting suspiciously and Dean goes to investigate his shop, only to find elves working inside. Sam asks Brennan for the truth and is told that he summoned a leprechaun two months ago. The leprechaun makes him a deal to have his elves build watches and save his shop and reputation, but will take his first-born in exchange. Dean is followed by the strange man and ambushes him only to mistakenly attack another man and is arrested for assault. Sam goes with Brennan to undo the spell but Brennan is killed by the leprechaun, who turns out to be a UFO enthusiast seen throughout the episode. He reveals he used the faked UFO sightings as cover up for the leprechauns' activities. The leprechaun senses the lack of a soul in Sam and makes an offer to get it back for him, but Sam declines and attacks him. While Sam fights the leprechaun, Dean fights the strange man in his detention cell, who is a gnome. Finally, Sam dumps salt which dispels the leprechaun's abilities and reads the spell to send all of them back to where they came from. Later, Dean asks Sam why he did not take the leprechaun's deal, and Sam replies that deals are never a good thing. Dean then asks Sam if he has second thoughts about getting his soul back, and Sam replies no, but the look on his face says otherwise.
114 10 "Caged Heat" Robert Singer Brett Matthews & Jenny Klein December 3, 2010 (2010-12-03) 3X6060 2.15[11]
After delivering another monster to Crowley's demons, Sam and Dean discuss what they could do, if anything, to trick Crowley and get Sam's soul back. However, they are ambushed by Meg the demon and some of her followers loyal to Lucifer. Sam correctly deduces that Meg is running from Crowley, who is purging demonkind of loyalists to Lucifer. Sam then proposes a bargain: Meg will get to kill Crowley, if she can help them eventually recover Sam's soul. Meg agrees, and Sam decides to seek insurance in case of treachery, as well as calling Castiel. After tricking Castiel into appearing, Sam bullies him into working with the brothers to seek out information. Eventually, the brothers visit the site where the alpha vampire was being kept, and are confronted by Samuel, who refuses to assist them. It is revealed that Crowley has promised to resurrect Sam and Dean's mother, to which Dean attempts to reason with Samuel about it being a bad decision. Samuel still refuses, and the brothers leave to find more information. However, Samuel appears to have a change of heart, and tells the brothers and Castiel about a hidden monster prison Crowley is running, torturing creatures for information on Purgatory. During their preparation to attack the compound, Castiel voices his concern that since Sam's soul was locked with the very bored Michael and Lucifer, the ravages upon Sam's soul would either kill him or render him insane or broken. Later, while attempting to infiltrate the compound, Meg's demons are killed by a hellhound, and Meg is forced to fight and kill the creatures to buy the others time. However, Samuel is revealed to have betrayed the brothers, forcing Castiel out of the building with a sigil spell and trapping Sam and Dean with Crowley's help. When Samuel visits Dean to explain himself, Dean coldly tells Samuel that when he gets out, he will kill him. Demons throw Dean into a room with hungry ghouls, while Sam bites himself in order to draw a devil's trap on the ceiling to trap the guards when they come for him. Sam then finds Dean and kills the ghouls, then both kill the demon controlling Christian, who found Meg and was torturing her for information. Together, the group tricks Crowley into stepping into a devil's trap, where Crowley states that getting the soul would be impossible, even for him, and further supports the fact that Sam's soul is most likely extremely damaged. Attempting to kill Crowley, Meg steps into the circle, only to have Crowley best her and free himself from the trap. Castiel reappears with Crowley's remains in tow, and once again Crowley professes that he cannot get Sam's soul back. Castiel immediately sets the bones ablaze, killing Crowley. Meg quickly vanishes, and Castiel leaves to fight a losing war against Raphael. Trying to be supportive of finding a way to get Sam's soul back, Dean is shocked at Sam's anger for trying so hard to save it. Sam walks away from Dean after stating that he doesn't want his soul back, as he is better off without it.
115 11 "Appointment in Samarra" Mike Rohl Sera Gamble & Robert Singer December 10, 2010 (2010-12-10) 3X6061 2.27[12]
Visiting an old physician who once treated his father, Dean is temporarily killed in a controlled chemical fashion in order to summon the reaper Tessa. Dean asks her to summon Death, which she refuses to do. Eventually, however, Death appears of his own accord, to see what Dean wants. Dean, believing that Death can get into Lucifer's cage, asks him to regain Sam's soul and to 'fix' the tortured parts. Chastising Dean that it's not that simple, Death states he can put up a wall around Sam's soul's memories of Hell, albeit the wall only being a temporary fix. In return, Death asks Dean to wear the Horseman Ring of Death for a day; should Dean take it off, the deal is broken, and Sam doesn't get his soul back. Telling the plan to Bobby and Sam, Dean plans to put on the ring, though Sam strongly disagrees and even attempts to find the ring first. Dean, assuming that would happen, already dug up the ring and puts it on. Dean is then accompanied by Tessa to kill and reap various people, with Dean initially being extremely judgmental of an armed robber and a fat man suffering a heart attack. Eventually, however, Dean is told to reap a 12-year old girl with a heart condition. Dean refuses to do so, and the girl begins to make a miraculous recovery. However, due to the change in the 'natural order', the nurse who was supposed to reside over the surgery goes home early, and is crushed in a car accident. Dean is forced to reap her soul, and sees the nurse's husband go on a drinking binge, then get into a car. Dean attempts to stop the man, and is forced to take off Death's ring to stop the man from killing himself. Failing in the deal, Dean puts on the Ring once more to reap the girl, admitting that though the natural order sucks, it must be adhered to. While Dean is acting as Death, Sam summons the angel Balthazar in an attempt to figure out how to keep his soul from returning to his body. Balthazar admits that there is a spell, but it requires the "blood of the father" - patricide. Since Sam's father had passed on years ago, a surrogate - Bobby - would be necessary. Sam then attempts to chase down Bobby, who catches on to Sam's attempt to kill him and tries to stop him. Eventually, Sam gains the upper hand, and prepares to kill Bobby, only to be stopped and knocked out by Dean. Unsure of what to do about Sam, Dean is surprised by Death, who has come to reclaim his Ring. Conversing with Dean, Death is surprised, yet pleased, that Dean would be willing to kill the girl if he had to do it over again. Dean realizes that Death's game was rigged (Death knew Dean could not last a day with the ring), and Death brushes off the accusation, revealing that he will still retrieve Sam's soul. Death then appears to Sam, soul in tow, and instructs Sam not to scratch at the wall he built around the Hell memories. Death then clutches the soul in his hand and pushes it into a screaming and pained Sam, while Dean and Bobby look on.

Production

The show's creator Eric Kripke originally planned for the show to last only five seasons, but due to increased ratings from the fourth and fifth seasons,[14] the CW network renewed the series for a sixth season.[15] Kripke did not return as showrunner; however, he remains a hands-on executive producer, leaving long-time series writer Sera Gamble to take over the day-to-day production of the show.[14] Also, Kripke confirmed in a interview that he will definitely write an episode or two and direct an episode scheduled to air in February 2011.[16]

Gamble has said the sixth season of the show will focus on the brothers' relationship.[17][18][19] The season will steer towards the format of the early seasons with "lots of meat-and-potatoes closed-ended episodes, and...a season-long story arc to weave in".[20] According to a press release by the CW, Heaven and Hell are now in "complete disarray", forcing Sam and Dean to reunite to "beat back the rising tide of creatures and demon-spawn" that "roam across a lawless and chaotic landscape".[1] The season will jump ahead a year to "get some distance between [Sam and Dean], get some personal history for each of them" to allow for "new conflict, new circumstances, new stuff".[21] The brothers' roles will be reversed, with Dean now hesitant to return to the hunting lifestyle.[22] The brothers will investigate why monsters have been "acting off-pattern".[23] The first few episodes will establish the mythology.[21] An episode spoofing Twilight and other vampire series aired in October, 2010 and examined the "current romantic fascination" with vampires.[24][25] However, the fanatics at the center of the Winchesters' remarks will be "disparaging" comments will be "slightly fictionalised". On this, Gamble noted, "...part of the thing is finding a balance between [showing] a poster from the actual show and having Sam and Dean really speak their minds. We don't want to offend." A fan of the Twilight series, she also commented, "I'm certainly not coming at this from a place of feeling superior to them. I have great respect."[26] Another episode of the season will consist of an "insane" storyline featuring Tinker Bell.[27]

Filming for the season began with the Ackles-directed fourth episode, "Weekend at Bobby's", to give the actor enough time for preproduction.[28] Misha Collins will return as series regular Castiel,[29] as will Jim Beaver as Bobby Singer.[30] Mitch Pileggi will make multiple appearances as Sam and Dean's grandfather.[31] The recurring role of Christian, the maternal cousin of Sam and Dean, was given to Corin Nemec;[32] he is described as "capable, calm under pressure, and very good at his job".[31] Kim Rhodes will return as Sheriff Jody Mills,[33] as will Fredric Lehne as Azazel.[34]
